For those that experience stress during a dentist appointment, sedation dentistry may be an effective solution. With its varied uses, this technique is not only utilized with patients experiencing anxiety about an upcoming visit, but it can also be leveraged in cases where an individual is undergoing a particularly long procedure.
At Covington Center for Family Dentistry, our team of sedation dentists creates a sense of calm for our patients, by administering sedatives to place them at ease for the duration of their appointment. Many of the services that we offer can be performed with the aid of sedation.
Often times, the term “sleep dentistry” is interchanged with “sedation dentistry;” however, the services that we offer do not require our patients to sleep. You will remain conscious during any of our sedation procedures.
Sedation Dentistry Services
Choose from services that include:
IV Sedation Dentistry
Intravenous conscious sedation creates a deep sense of relaxation within the patient. If you opt for this method, expect to feel completely relaxed by the procedure that is being performed. Although you are placed under deep sedation, you are still able to communicate with your dentist.
It typically takes about 30 minutes for the effects of the sedative to wear off, although you may feel drowsy beyond that period of time, and may not be able to remember the procedure. It is highly-suggested that you arrange transportation to and from the office if undergoing this form of sedation.
Oral Conscious Sedation Dentistry
Oral conscious sedation offers a mild level of relaxation that lies between the effects of nitrous oxide and intravenous conscious sedation. The difference is that the oral sedative is prescribed to the patient, who will take it before their sedation dentistry appointment.
When the patient arrives at the dentist office, they will feel calm, rather than anxious. Our sedation dentists can then perform the procedure, or in cases where it is needed, Nitrous Oxide may also be used in conjunction with the oral sedative.
With oral sedatives, patients should also arrange transportation to and from our office.
